Washington - From a bias for Israel, to its right-wing

Oraib Al Rantawi

It is very difficult to differentiate between the Republican candidate Mitt Romney and the Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman. Both of them belong to the “rightist ideology”- the hostile school against the Palestinians. Recently, Romney stated that the Palestinians did not want peace with Israel, something Lieberman has repeatedly announced before and has accused President Abbas for the failed negotiations and collapse of “the peace process.” One of the main propaganda pillars of Romney’s electoral campaign is based on the idea that Obama is not a good friend for Israel and he prefers to alliance with Islamists over “the only democracy in the Middle East’s desert.” Surely, the accusation and allegations said by Romney cannot pass unnoticed without a response by Obama’s electoral campaign. Obama presented an “Inventory Account” during the party’s conference in Charlotte, to prove that he is the most loyal president to the Hebrew state and its strategic interests. It seemed that this congress member who showed such argument was elected for an Israeli state, not an American one. The last-minute amendments to the programme of the Democratic Party were a humiliating test to the ruling party in the United States of America. Once the Republicans noticed that the Democratic programme does not mention Jerusalem as Israeli’s capital, Obama hastens, personally, to suggest adding this phrase. What was worse was the way in which the phrase was added. It seems that Israel, Palestine and the Palestinian cause will forever remain listed in the market of the American Presidential elections, even after the elections end. It is raw material for arguments, recording stances and even launching accusations. Whatever the result, only the Israeli will top the winners list, whilst the Palestinians, yet again will be the unfortunate losers. Following our observation for the internal American politics, it is foolish to bet on the effective American role to solve the Palestinian issue and push forward the peace process played by this powerful state. This is the real view from the very beginning and will remain without change in the long perspective. Whoever still relies on Washington’s role, before or after the election, during the second term for Obama or the first for Romney, might as well give up on this idea. The United States of America, until further notice, will not be able to nor desire to put pressure on Israel. America is developing from supporting Israel in to the rightist, and even extreme, speech. Is this not what Romney has voluntarily done with his last "Liebermanic" statements? Is this not exactly what Obama, willingly or not, is also doing? The state which embodies the legitimate rights of the Palestinians and represents the first line to defend Jordan’s interests has fallen as well. We said this before and we are repeating it again now – Jordanian’s diplomacy needs to prepare an alternative plan, one that will be ready to confront various possibilities and one that shall contain a hope of President Abbas taking decisions and applying the “alternatives” he always refers to. For now, however, we shall have to just wait and watch. --- The views expressed by the author do not necessarily represent or reflect the editorial policy of Arabstoday.
