The scam frequently reappears to dupe users
Abu Dhabi - Emirates Voice

An old WhatsApp scam has resurfaced that tricks people into providing their bank details.

Appearing as an official message, it warns users that their "trial service" of WhatsApp is ending.

"Our records indicate that your WhatsApp trial service is exceeding the one-year period. At the completion of your trial period your WhatsApp will no longer be able to send or receive message [sic]. To continue using WhatsApp without interuption [sic], we need you to subscribe for any of our subscription periods."

The message then provides a link to a 'customer portal' where the victim can provide their bank details, the Mirror reported.

In 2016, Facebook had scrapped an annual fee after buying WhatsApp for £11.4bn," Action Fraud told the Mirror, which means that the service has been free since 2016.

As one of the most popular messaging apps in the world - boasting 1 billion daily users - this scam frequently reappears to dupe users.
How to spot a hoax

WhatsApp has advised users on how to take action.

"We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it."
Here are some points to identify a hoax:

- The sender claims to be affiliated with WhatsApp.

- The message content includes instructions to forward the message.

- The message claims you can avoid punishment, like account suspension, if you forward the message.

- The message content includes a reward or gift from WhatsApp or another person.

The messaging app also offers a block feature to block such senders.
