Abu Dhabi Police said they have arrested five men suspected of trying to smuggle 100kg of hashish and one million Captagon pills into the UAE.
The men were caught in coordination with Dubai Police as they attempted to bring in the drugs through the Dubai Creek dock with the intention of selling the drugs in the country.
Lt. Colonel Taher Al-Dhaheri, head of the Anti-Narcotics Department at Abu Dhabi Police said the anti-narcotics team had received information about a huge amount of drugs being hidden in the secret compartments of a boat that was docked at the Dubai Creek port.
Police said the smugglers posed as sailors working on the cargo vessel.
The anti-narcotics team managed to arrest the five men suspected of smuggling drugs in a successful operation. The men also seized a big quantity of drugs including 100kg of hashish and a million Captagon pills from the boat.
Police said the drugs were well hidden and were not very easy to detect but the force managed to catch the smugglers red-handed.
Al Dhaheri said the quick response of the police force helped in the confiscation of the drugs before they reached the local market.
Investigations suggested that the men were intending to selling the drugs in the country. They have been referred to the public prosecution.
Al Dhaheri has applauded the Dubai Police for their efforts in foiling the bid to smuggle the drugs and in apprehending these suspects.
Police said their skilled and well-trained team is always on the alert to detect and combat smugglers at all the country's entry points and warned that those attempting to smuggle drugs into the UAE will be caught and prosecuted.
