Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has sent out his greeting to the Filipino people on the occasion of the 119th Independence Day of the Philippines.
The statement, which was made available in both English and Filipino languages was issued by the Malacanan Palace - the seat of the Philippine Government on June 12 - the date of the Philippine Independence.
In an official statement, Duterte touches upon the sacrifices made by Filipinos throughout history. It harkens strongly to the country's colonial history as well as the wartime period of the 1940s. He then makes it a point that despite the trials that the country and its people faced, they still emerge triumphant at the end of the day.
Duterte asks the Filipino populace to celebrate the country's freedom using words and phrases reflective of his governance. He also reminded Filipinos of their duty as citizens. He said: 'It is our inherent duty to ensure that the Philippines fulfills its destiny as a great and prosperous nation'
Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano also sent out his greeting to the Filipino people.
