Chairman of the Human Rights Committee at the Shura Council, Ahmed Mahdi Al-Haddad, has asserted that the Kingdom of Bahrain has dealt with the 175 recommendations submitted by member states during the Human Rights Council (UNHRC)’s session on the Universal Periodic Review of Bahrain in May, 2017, seriously.

Geneva, Sep. 22 (BNA): Chairman of the Human Rights Committee at the Shura Council, Ahmed Mahdi Al-Haddad, has asserted that the Kingdom of Bahrain has dealt with the 175 recommendations submitted by member states during the Human Rights Council (UNHRC)’s session on the Universal Periodic Review of Bahrain in May, 2017, seriously.

He pointed out that the Kingdom had made advanced human rights strides, building on its successes over the past years.

In a statement on the sidelines of the 36th session of the UNHRC in which Bahrain presented its response to the 175 recommendations, Al-Haddad said that the Legislative Branch had passed many laws relating to comprehensive human rights, and have been widely welcomed by the Bahraini society and many countries.

In this regard, he cited the Unified Family Law, the Flexible Work Permit, the Law on Penalties and Alternative Procedures, as well as the ratification of the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention.

He pointed out that the kingdom is constantly reviewing its human rights legislation and laws in a bid to ensure that they keep abreast of the latest international standards in this regard.

The Shura Council’s Human Rights Committee chairman commended the efforts exerted by the High Coordination Committee for Human Rights at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in reviewing the recommendations, and keenness on involving NGOs in its meetings in order to include all visions in the kingdom’s response to them.

Al-Haddad stressed that the kingdom had proved its respect for all human rights principles, and activate them, in line with its unwavering commitment to international conventions and treaties, as well as its long-standing respect for the human rights of the citizens and residents.

Concluding his statement, he said that the Constitution, as well as laws and legislation relating to political and civic rights in Bahrain guarantee human rights for all citizens and residents.
