Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir has stressed the importance of Turkey’s role in boosting regional stability.
Speaking to Al Arabiya channel, he underlined that the Recep Tayyip Erdogan government successfully defeated the attempted military coup — a delicate issue.
Commenting on a host of issues, he reiterated the Kingdom’s stance on Syria that the peaceful solution is a regime change without any role for Bashar Assad.
"There is a fertile ground for terrorism in Syria and Iraq. However, it is important to get rid of Assad to end the existence of Daesh."
He said Iraq still suffers from Iran’s interference in its domestic affairs and that Tehran is to blame for bad Iraqi economic condition.
He said it is necessary to implement the economic reforms announced in 2014 and to enhance security coordination to fight terrorism.
"Sectarianism came to the region when (Ayatollah) Khomeini came to power in Iran in 1979. Iran established Hezbollah in Lebanon as the first terrorist organization in the region. The Kingdom did not take any strong action against Iran since the revolution there. However, Iran has maintained an aggressive behavior toward GCC states,” he explained.
He demanded that Iran change its policy and respect international laws. “We have never seen any moderate policy from President Hassan Rouhani," Al-Jubeir pointed out.
Earlier, Al-Jubeir told journalists that Riyadh has no intention to take legal action against the US after the latter exonerated the Kingdom of charges of supporting terrorism.
Some Saudi political analysts had been suggesting the prosecution of those who have been smudging the image of Saudi Arabia and its people since the 9/11 attacks.
Addressing a press conference after the publishing of the US inquiry report, he said any litigation between states involves many complexities, and “the thing that really matters to Saudi Arabia is the unequivocal facts; the 28 pages have established that the Kingdom was not involved in financing terrorist operations.”
He added: “We are very particular in keeping our reputation unsullied. The surprise to other parties is that Saudi Arabia is innocent.”
He said: “We can now look to the future and bring the curtain down on this issue. We are committed and determined to harness all the means and resources to pursue terrorists and work with other countries to achieve this goal.”
