Nikkei closed 0.40 percent higher Wednesday. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 36.52 points, or 0. 40 percent, from Tuesday at 9,069.81. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 3.73 points, or 0.50 percent, higher at 750.03. Gainers included the oil and coal products, electric machinery and air transport sectors. Decliners included the sea transport, retailer and pharmaceutical sectors. The turnover was about 782.5 billion yen (about 9.96 billion U. S. dollars).
