The UN special force deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo began firing mortar rounds at M23 rebels on Monday, an officer with the brigade said, as they joined in a major assault by the Congolese army to wipe out the rebellion. The officer added that the force had joined the combat after receiving a "green light" on Monday to do so. UN forces have until now backed the Congolese forces with aerial reconnaissance, intelligence and planning.
