German Chancellor Angela Merkel was elected head of her conservative Christian Democrats for the eighth time on Tuesday, winning 96.7 percent of delegates' votes.
Merkel, 60, thanked the party congress for the "overwhelming vote of confidence" after her unopposed re-election, whose result was below the 97.9 percent she won last time, in 2012.
