Pro-Russian rebels on Saturday fired volleys of heavy Grad rockets on a residential district of the government-held port of Mariupol after vowing to step up their campaign against the Kiev government, officials said.
The administration of the southeastern Sea of Azov city of nearly 500,000 said the long-range rockets hit a market on a southeastern district facing roads that have come under attack from the rebels in recent days.
The pro-Kiev volunteer Azov regiment based around the city said there were "many wounded" in the attack.
