Egypt condemned as "terrorist" simultaneous attacks Wednesday on two police, military and intelligence targets in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

At least 16 people were killed and dozens wounded in the attacks, which were claimed by Afghan Taliban militants.

The foreign ministry said in a statement late Wednesday that Egypt is "standing by the Afghani government and people in the fight against terrorism," urging intensified efforts by the international community to combat terrorism.

The Taliban in Afghanistan are working to force out foreign troops, defeat the US-backed government and reimpose Islamic law after their 2001 ouster.

Government forces have struggled to control the insurgency since a NATO-led force ended its combat mission there in 2014.

According to US estimates, Afghan government forces now control less than 60 percent of the country although they hold all main provincial centres
