Spanish cyclist Daniel Moreno won the fourth stage of the Tour of Spain, a 172km ride from Baza, after a mountain duel on the heights of the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday. France's Sylvain Chavanel became the fourth wearer of the overall leader's red jersey in as many days as Monday's 35-year-old stage winner Pablo Lastras failed to follow up his performance in the third stage. British rider Mark Cavendish, who last month became the first British rider to win the Tour de France green jersey, dismounted and abandoned after 125.5 kilometres of the stage. Moreno powered ahead of Denmark's Chris Sorensen in the last few metres as the two attacked the 2,100-metre summit, to finish the 170-kilometre ride in 4hr 51min 54sec. Irishman Daniel Martin finished third, with another Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez, in fourth, 11 seconds behind the winner. Moreno stood second overall, 43 seconds behind Chavanel, with former red jersey wearer Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang of Leopard Trek third, 49 seconds adrift.
