An electronic bracelet will be used to determine the geographical location

An electronic tracking device that will restrict and monitor the movements of people convicted in minor offences instead of jailing them has been introduced in Abu Dhabi. The tracking system is an alternative to short-term imprisonment for minor offences in Abu Dhabi.

An electronic bracelet will be used to determine the geographical location of a convict as per restrictions imposed on him by the prosecutors.

Ali Mohammed Al Baloushi, attorney-general of Abu Dhabi, confirmed that the public prosecution has introduced the state-of-the-art security service.

"The system is the first of its kind in the region. The device will help in controlling the convicted person and will also have a positive impact on him," said Al Baloushi.

He said the police will be monitoring a convict using the tracking bracelet, thus achieving the judicial authorities' goal of preventing the convict from committing the crime again.

In addition to achieving a "number of social objectives", the new system will help the convicted person stay with his or her family and reintegrate in society.

The public prosecution will provide the procedural facilities to compel the convicts to wear the electronic bracelet. The police's follow-up department will place the electronic bracelet on the convicted person, who will be monitored 24/7 as he goes through a rehabilitation programme.
