The man had sold containers of food products

A man who was convicted of embezzling Dh103,000 from a food company has been fined Dh1,000 and ordered to return the money.

The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi upheld an earlier ruling by the appeal court which handed down the sentence to the Arab man after he was found guilty of misappropriating cash from the company he worked for.

According to court documents, the man had sold containers of food products worth Dh103,000 that belonged to the company, but didn't hand over the money to the company. The firm then filed a law suit against him after he failed to pay their cash. The defendant denied embezzlement of the funds.

He said he neither received any container from the company nor did he work for them. He also argued that the statements of the company's representative were contradictory concerning the value of the food products that were sold.

He said he put his signature on the invoices under duress and he didn't know English, which was used on the receipts.

The First Instance Court had earlier acquitted him of the charge but he was later convicted and fined Dh1,000 after prosecutors appealed the ruling.

The man challenged the verdict at the UAE's top court which rejected his appeal and maintained earlier verdict based on evidence presented by prosecutors.
