At least 16 people were killed late Sunday when their bus overturned in northern Peru, the South American country's Highway Police said on Monday.

According to police reports, the bus carrying passengers skidded off the road before turning over in Jose Sabogal, a town in the province of San Marcos, in the country's north Cajamarca region.

Another six people were injured.
