The German authorities evacuated residents from their homes in the western German city

The German authorities evacuated residents from their homes in the western German city of Krefeld late Tuesday to defuse an unexploded World War II bomb.
The bomb, a 250-kilogram war relic, was found just one meter underground during excavation work at a former retirement home, the local fire department said in a statement early Wednesday. Bomb experts determined that the bomb had to be defused quickly.
Around 500 residents within a 100 meter radius were forced to evacuate the area while the bomb was defused, with some less-mobile neighbors being moved by ambulance. Streets in the area were also blocked off by police.
On May 7, authorities in Hanover defused three much larger World War II-era bombs, in the second-largest operation to remove unexploded ordnance in the country's history.
During that operation, 50,000 people had to be evacuated from the surrounding area.
