Sanyal acted in a number of television serials and was associated with Ranga Sabha too

Sumita Sanyal - the actress who played Amitabh Bachchan's lady love in the 1971 hit Hindi film 'Anand' - has passed away at the age of 71.

Sumita also acted in films like 'Guddi', 'Aashirwad' and 'Mere Apne'.

She was the wife of film editor Subodh Roy and they have a son. Sumita also played major roles in many Bengali movies. In fact, 'Khokhababur Pratyabartan' was her debut film. It was released in 1960.

She portrayed significant characters in Bengali films like 'Sagina Mahato' (in which Dilip Kumar was her costar). She played the lead role in the movie 'Kuheli' with Biswajit and Sandhya Roy.

She acted in a number of TV serials and was associated with Ranga Sabha too.

Bengal's superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee tweeted: "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace."

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee tweeted her condolences. She posted, "Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."
