The Al Hayat Center for Civil Society Development (RASED) and the Lower House’s Women and Family Affairs Committee Sunday held a training conference on promoting women’s participation in upcoming municipal and governorate council elections.

A group of women candidates and women rights activists from across the Kingdom as well as female members of parliament took part in the meeting, part of RASED’s approach to enhance positive cooperation with state institutions to advance political reform in the country.

Head of the parliamentary committee, Reem Abu Dalbouh, stressed support for women to have a clear and real role in the mid-August polls, through candidacy or voting, saying such involvement would enhance female presence in the decision-making centres.

“Women need to present themselves through their programmes and plans so that society will be a real partner in the success of these programmes and
plans”, she stressed.

She demanded the enhancement of civil society institutions as an advocate of women’s role and a supporter of their integration into the political process in general and the electoral process in particular.

The women MPs stressed the importance of women’s presence in municipal and governorate councils to be in direct and close contact with the society, and to enable women to gain the necessary skills for their access into the decision-making centres.

Al Hayat Center, a non-governmental civil society organization, aims to promote accountability, governance, public participation and tolerance in Jordan and the region within the framework of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
