UAE Ambassador to Egypt and permanent envoy to the Arab League Gomaa Al Genieby on Thursday described the current crisis in Syria as an unprecedented catastrophe.

This came during his speech at the opening session of the AL urgent meeting at the level of permanent envoys that aims to discuss the latest developments in Syria.

The ambassador added that the random shelling that targets Aleppo killed hundreds of civilians, adding that food, water and oil had run out due to the siege imposed on the city.

He also said that 16,000 people were displaced while thousands others are expected to flee their homes if clashes continued in the coming few days.

Genieby condemned the international community for not reacting to such war crimes. 

The international community failed to contain the crisis since its beginning until it reached such a catastrophic situation, he said.

The ambassador called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility concerning the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo and to immediately interfere to stop such crimes.

He also urged all parties concerned to exert more efforts to protect civilians and to stop shelling in order to allow humanitarian and medical aid to reach Syrians. He pointed out that more than 270,000 civilians are in dire need of this aid to stay alive.
