Bahrain has imported 55,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables to meet the soaring demand during Eid Al-Adha.
Undersecretary for Agriculture and Marine Resources Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al-Khalifa said that all facilities had been provided for importers to supply the local market, avert any shortage and maintain price stability to avoid any hike.
He stressed keenness on diversifying the sources of imports, pointing out that more than 80 companies supply the local market with fruits and vegetables from 70 countries from all over the world. Citing updates figures, he said that the domestic agricultural products yielded by more than 900 farms have covered 25% of the local needs as part of a four-year-strategy to boost Bahrain’s agricultural output.
"The agricultural sector has contributed tangibly in the diversification of the sources of revenues", he said, adding that 270 farms succeeded in boosting their overall output which exceeded 23,000 tons in 2017. He paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, hailing his directives to develop the agricultural sector and achieve self-sufficiency in certain products and revive national industries, such as the canning of dates for long preservation.
