Chief Islamic Justice Ahmad Hilayel has called on the public to look for the hilal (crescent moon) that marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan at sunset on Thursday, July 19. If the sighting is confirmed, Muslims in Jordan will start fasting on Friday, otherwise, the holy month will begin on Saturday. According to Islamic law, sighting of the hilal at dusk on the evening of the 29th of Shaban (the eighth month of the lunar Islamic calendar) is the only way to determine the beginning of Ramadan.
