The Justice and Development Party (PJD) held an ordinary session on February 11 and 12 to elect the members and the chairman for the preparatory committee in charge of the party’s next congress.
The Justice and Development Party’s ordinary session was held in the city of Bouznika, near Rabat, Saturday and Sunday. The meeting was highlighted by a speech from the party’s Secretary General, and Morocco’s appointed Head of the Government, Abdelilah Benkirane.
The session included the election of the members and the chairman for the preparatory committee overseeing the party’s next congress. Without further details, the next congress was scheduled in “summer.”
It was also expected that a Secretary General for the party to replace Benkirane would be elected. According to the regulatory laws of the party, Benkirane does not have the right to be elected to a third term, unless changes are introduced by the National Council. This was not part of the agenda of the PJD’s ordinary session, however, which was limited to discussing the elections, the performance of the government and the government formation.
Abdelilah Benkirane made a speech at the opening of the session where he evaluated the most important events of last year including the elections of October 7, the government’s record, as well as the state of stagnancy due to the obstruction in the government formation.
“If we are to abandon the presidency of the government in the interests of our country, we will do so without hesitation,” said Benkirane, noting that no one can question the party’s respect and loyalty to the institutions, particularly ”the monarchical institutions.”
Abdelilah Benkirane also restated his refusal to include the Socialist Union of Popular Forces in the government majority, adding that the party must “humble itself” since it won 20 seats, which is fewer than the number of seats the PJD won in the city of Rabat alone.
