Mohammed Mubarak Al Mutaiwei, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Communications and Community Sector, said that Dubai Municipality's Car Free Day has become one of the most unique initiatives in the region.
He was speaking during a ceremony organised at Grand Hyatt Hotel to honour the supporters and participants in the initiative.
The ceremony held by the Municipality honoured the government departments, sponsoring companies, institutions and journalists who supported the initiative, the companies that participated in the exhibition as well as the organisational units of Dubai Municipality which contributed to the success of the initiative.
"This year, Dubai Municipality has been keen to link its environmental initiative with the Year of Giving declared by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with two goals: the first is environmental, and the second is charity. The specialists in the Municipality calculated the carbon footprint and converted it into cash to donate it to charity," said Al Mutaiwei.
He added that the initiative grew in the past years with regards to the nature and size of the participants from various governmental and non-governmental sectors, which represented a comprehensive support for the initiative and the participation of different sectors such as the education sector, development sector, retail sector, hotels, banks and the people of determination (special needs) in its various activities.
