Al-Arabiya News Channel praised the role of Bahrain’s reformation and rehabilitation centres in rehabilitating and preparing inmates to reintegrate within the local community after serving their prison sentences.

Al-Arabiya report said the process of the inmates’ rehabilitation and re-engagement with the community are based on local and international laws and standards, through which Bahrain aims to achieve reforms and strengthen the role of reformation and rehabilitation centres in providing various programmes and services to inmates.

It said the centres comprise workshops for carpentry, painting, fine arts, electronics and sewing, in addition to educational classes and medical centres to provide them with health care.

Lt. Colonel Dr. Mazen Al-Tamimi , from the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre said that the inmates receive advanced educational services, learn computer basics and develop their scientific skills.

Head of Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, Nawaf Mohammed Al Maawda, said the rehabilitation centre is based on two philosophies, follow-up, which ensures the provision of the inmates’ rights, and development, which is achieved through submitting recommendations to the Interior Ministry for improving services provided and living conditions in the centres.

He pointed out the development of Bahrain’s laws in recent years, which allows many institutions, including the Ombudsman Office and National Institution for Human Rights, to visit the centres to follow up the inmates’ conditions and rights. He also noted the memorandum of understanding signed by the Interior Ministry and the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to which the latter is entitled to conduct periodic visits to the Reformation and Rehabilitation centre.

He talked about the main recommendations implemented with regard to living conditions in the centre, as well as replacing the old buildings with newer ones in line with international standards to include sufficient lighting and more spaces to be enjoyed by the inmates.

He said all reports and observations made by the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission are considered by prisons managements.
