Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails suspended a hunger strike they started on April 17 in an effort to improve the deplorable conditions faced by 6,500 prisoners.

President of the Palestinian Prisoner Society Qadourah Faris told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the prisoners suspended their hunger strike after concluding an agreement with Israel, allowing prisoners to receive two visitors per month.

The strike was called by Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti to protest against solitary confinement and an Israeli practice of detention without trial that has been applied to thousands of prisoners since the 1980s.

Currently, there are 6,500 Palestinian political prisoners held by Israel, including 29 who have been detained before the peace dealt that was signed between the Palestinians and Israelis in 1993.
