White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said that the White House plans to use the border security spending increase, which was approved by Congress' negotiators during the negotiations for budget deal, to initiate the construction of a steel border wall between the US and Mexico.
Mulvaney acknowledged that the funding won't allow the White House to build the massive concrete barriers Trump has promised his supporters, but the administration still plans to fix and replace existing fencing with a "see-through steel wall." The Democrats touted the budget agreement, which was announced a couple of days ago, as a win and claimed it blocked new funding for border wall construction, according to the CNN.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday: "The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren't used to fund an ineffective border wall." However, Trump touted the border security funding as a "down payment on the border wall."
