Barbara A. Leaf, U.S. Ambassador to the UAE

As we celebrate 241 years of U.S. Independence, the occasion helps turn our minds both to history and to the future. As the U.S. Ambassador to the UAE, I am particularly focused on the historic and growing ties between our two great nations. The U.S. and UAE have been strategic allies and wide-ranging partners for over 40 years - ever since the founding of the UAE. From security to science and culture to commerce, our strong and dynamic partnerships have flourished year-on-year.

The recent meeting at the White House between His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and President Donald Trump, which was immediately followed by the President's visit to the region, is a clear indication of the importance of the U.S.-UAE bilateral relationship and the strong commitment to our nations' continued partnership.

One of the most dynamic areas of U.S.-UAE collaboration is our rapidly growing trade, commercial and economic relationship. With over $25 billion in two-way trade, the UAE is America's largest export market in the Middle East for the 8th year running and our 16th largest worldwide. And, at $27.4 billion in total foreign stock investment, the UAE is America's 7th fastest growing source of foreign direct investment and the largest source from the Middle East. It is a relationship that touches every emirate and every U.S. state, creating high-paying jobs, spurring economic growth, and stimulating economic diversification in both our countries.

Given these facts, it is no surprise that over 1,500 U.S. firms have established a presence here in the UAE. American companies have made the UAE their home in recognition of its role as a regional business hub and trading platform. From apples to airplanes, from energy to infrastructure, American quality, reliability, and innovative technology set us apart from the competition - and our partners in the UAE recognise the difference.

As we to work together to build a better tomorrow, I look forward to our countries continuing to collaborate and forge new economic and business partnerships in areas like public health, education, and space exploration, as well as across a spectrum of cross-cutting industry trends including urbanisation, safety and security, water consumption, energy diversification, and cybersecurity.

With decades of history behind us, and many years of vibrant U.S.-UAE partnerships ahead of us, I look forward to all that we will be able to achieve together.
