Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has called on the European Union officials to support the Palestinian demand for gaining international recognition of an independent Palestinian state and its membership of the United Nations. In letters he sent to officials in the European Union, the OIC Secretary General referred to the need to support the legitimate Palestinian demands in light of the Israeli measures that undermine the chances of the peace process and prevent any progress on the path of negotiations, as well as the right of the Palestinians right to establish their independent state by the month of September, the date that was determined by international agreement He explained that the continued intransigence of Israel and its evasion of the terms of reference of the peace process push the Palestinians to resort to the United Nations for their due independence. The OIC Secretary General''s letters, came along with letters he sent to other countries are observer members in the Organization in the context of the Organization''s efforts to provide possible international support to help the Palestinians who intend to apply for the recognition of the Palestinian state and the full membership of the United Nations during the meetings of the UN General Assembly in mid-September. It is worth mentioning that the meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers, held in Astana late in June, had called on the international community to support the establishment of a Palestinian State.
