King Abdullah II of Jordan conferred here on Monday with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, who is now visiting Jordan as part of his current tour of the region , They discussed the latest developments in the Middle East as well as cooperation between Jordan and Germany. King Abdullah stressed the importance for Germany and Europe to continue supporting peace efforts, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders in line with the two-state solution. He said that arriving at a just and comprehensive solution that addresses all final status issues, including Jerusalem and refugees, is a priority for Jordan, adding the Kingdom supports the right of Palestinians in establishing an independent state and attaining freedom. For his part, the German minister said his country backs efforts designed to end the current stalemate in the peace process through the resumption of direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis. Talks during the meeting also touched on decision of the Palestinian National Authority to ask for full UN membership and position of the United States and a number of European countries on this issue. Westerwelle stressed Germany\'\'s support to Jordan\'\'s efforts to acheive political and economic reforms under the leadership of His Majesty the King to ensure a better future for all Jordanians. He said steps taken by the jordanian monarch to accelerate the political reform process were bold and courageous, adding that both Germany and the European Union support these measures and deem them important. Prospects for enhancing bilateral cooperation, mainly in the economic and investment fields were also taken up.
