The governments of the EU Member States Friday appointed President of the Administrative Court of Appeal of Gothenburg Carl Gustav Fernlund Judge of the European Court of Justice. The Government decided to nominate him for the position on 31 May 2011. Fernlund has been President of the Supreme Administrative Court since July 1, 2009. He was previously Justice of the Supreme Administrative Court, a position he assumed in 2005. From 2000 to 2005 he was Director-General and head of the Tax and Customs Department at the Ministry of Finance. From 1998 to 1999 he served as economic adviser in Brussels. Fernlund has been expert advisor to a number of government-appointed inquiries in the tax area and from 2005 to 2009 he was Inquiry Chair of the Tax Procedure Inquiry. He is a member of the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) and an arbitrator under the EU Arbitration Convention on the Elimination of Double Taxation. He is also a member of the Board of the Swedish Pensions Agency. He succeeds Judge Pernilla Lindh at the Court of Justice. He will take up the position on October 7.
