Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Ahmed Aboul Ghait has welcomed the resolution by the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which affirms that the Old City of East Jerusalem is purely Palestinian and that Israel has no sovereignty over it.
A statement issued by the Arab League today said that Aboul Ghait thanked the countries which voted in favor of the resolution, stressing that it represents an important step in exposing Israeli practices aimed at changing the character of the Holy City and changing its legal status, to which UNESCO's resolution has unequivocally referred to as "null and void and must be rescinded forthwith".
The statement added that Aboul Ghait called on all actors in the international community to deny legitimacy of Israeli practices and policies in East Jerusalem and all the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that the next stage will see the return of the Palestinian issue to take its place at the top of the global agenda.
