Thousands of police officers were mustering Sunday in Cologne in western German as the city braced for up to 30,000 demonstrators expected to rally in support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
The demonstration, organized by European-Turkish organization UETD under the motto "Yes to democracy. No to the coup," was called to protest the coup attempt on July 15 in Turkey that left more than 260 people dead and triggered mass arrests and purges of the military, government and civil service, according to the (dpa) news agency.
Representatives of all Turkish political parties, including the opposition, are scheduled to speak, UETD General Secretary Buelent Bilgi told dpa, noting that no members of the Turkish government were expected to attend.
