Algerian daily newspaper Echourouk reports that a soldier was killed and two others were wounded after a roadside bomb went off as a military convoy passed by in the northeastern Kabylie region. Last Thursday, a police vehicle was attacked in the city of Tizi-Ouzou in the same region, killing an officer. The predominantly Berber Kabylie region has been a battleground between government forces and an Islamist insurgency since the 1990s. In 2006 the Islamists declared their allegiance to al-Qaeda.
