Nouakchott - Mohammad Sharif Aabidi
Dozens of women belonging to the Salafist movement in Mauritania on Thursday protested for the adoption of Sharia (Islamic) law in the country instead of a democratic and secular model. Security forces have confiscated their posters and banners. The protesters said they were calling to \"apply the laws sent by god\". They added: \"The sharia can be adopted in any time and place, so we refuse any justification for not adopting it.\" The protesters called for the release of Salafist detainees in Mauritanian prisons, demanding they face \"fair judgment that is based on Islamic law\". The protesters also raised slogans which said: \"No to secularism, no to democracy, yes to adopting Sharia.\"
