A police officer committed suicide on Sunday morning in the Iraqi province of Wasit. A police spokesman said to Arabstoday that “an officer named Saief Ismail Sahep shot himself on Sunday morning in Kut city, using his colleague’s weapon. The reason of this suicide is unknown.” A source who wished to remain anonymous said that security forces immediately attended the scene. They arrested the owner of the weapon, and they transferred the body to the forensic department. Iraq does not have accurate statistics on suicides caused by social pressure and the media. The government has not put in place programmes able to reveal the reasons of this issue. Many Iraqi cities have seen a number of suicides in the last few years. Psychologists explain this phenomenon with psychological pressures and the metamorphosis of Iraqi society since 2003.
