Geneva - QNA
The number of deaths from Ebola in West Africa has passed 10,000, the World Health Organization has said marking a milestone in the deadly epidemic that broke out a year ago.
Despite a sharp decline in new transmissions in the past months due to intensified international aid efforts, the Ebola virus continues to spread in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, which have been devastated by the disease.
WHO reported Thursday that the number of deaths had hit 10,004 and the total number of cases stood at 24,350.
David Nabarro, UN special envoy on Ebola, has repeatedly called on countries to continue funding efforts until the number of new transmissions hit zero.
