Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhouri on Monday discussed with U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, ways to cement Jordanian-U.S. ties and a number of Middle East issues.
During the meeting, the minister called for additional international support and grants for Jordan to enable it to deal with the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis and regional turmoil.
Fakhouri spoke about the government’s efforts to bring about comprehensive reform and maintain macroeconomic stability in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund.
The minister highlighted Jordan’s economic outlook and efforts to increase growth rates, ease off public debt pressures, and combatting unemployment and poverty.
Despite difficult regional conditions, Jordan has succeeded in maintaining its resilience, the minister said, appreciating the support and assistance the U.S. extended to the Kingdom over the past few years.
The U.S. official expressed the appreciation of the United States of America for the role played by Jordan under His Majesty’s leadership in the region, in addition to the political and economic reforms that have made the Kingdom a model in the region.
She said her country understands the burdens borne by Jordan, due to a massive influx of Syrian refugees and its impact on host communities, as well as the adverse impact of regional unrest and its effects on the Jordanian economy.
