Liwa International Festival
The Liwa International Festival yesterday drew to a finale featuring bike and car races at the Tel Moreeb, the top of the world's tallest sand dune. Held from 28th December 2013 to 3rd January 2014, by Abu Dhabi Motor Club under the
patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, the event was a big attraction for thrill-seekers and at the same time makes for an ideal family outing as the wonderful weather and the fantastic desert settings of Al Gharbia provide a perfect backdrop to the excursion.
The seven-day Liwa International Festival brought together the region's most powerful four wheel drives and bikers to tackle Tel Moreeb. With a variety of races (cars, bikes, falcon, camel and horses), the event also featured a variety of food stalls and a kids play area - making it a great family day out.
The event is a week-long celebration of UAE heritage with competitions and spectacles including horse, camel and falcon racing and, more popularly with Emiratis and expats alike, some wild, stunt-laden motor racing of a unique variety. Car race winners were awarded.
