DPR Korea beat France 3-1 to claim the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup title at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Grace Geyoro had put France ahead early on, but subsequent goals from Wi Jong-sim and Kim Phyong-hwa, as well as Jon So-yon’s last gasp penalty saw DPR Korea crowned champions of the competition for a second time following their 2006 triumph.
Despite falling behind to France in the final, the North Koreans managed to turn a compelling match in their favour to become world champions for the second time since 2006.
Meanwhile Japan emerged victorious over USA, securing another third-place finish after recording the same result in 2012.
A late Jon So-yon penalty added further gloss to the scoreline as DPR Korea were duly crowned champions of a FIFA women’s tournament for the second time within a matter of weeks following the country’s recent FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup triumph in Jordan.
