Al-Qaeda targets a military checkpoint to avenge ongoing offensive A suicide car bomb at a checkpoint in central Yemen killed 11 soldiers on Monday, local sources said, in what has been viewed as a response by al-Qaeda to a massive army offensive against militants in the country ."11 soldiers were killed and 17 others wounded in the attack," sources told Arabstoday.
The attack targeted a military checkpoint between Radaa and Manaseh, where the army military operation was taking place.
Elsewhere in the same province, an al-Qaeda ambush killed one soldier and wounded two others.
Four al-Qaeda militants were meanwhile killed in an army offensive launched late on Sunday, in an attempt to free one Austrian and two Finnish nationals, reportedly being held hostage by the group in Manaseh.
Al-Qaeda forces in the area have refused to surrender despite mediation efforts by local tribes.
