German airline Lufthansa said Monday that it will continue to suspend flights to the northern Iraqi city of Erbil out of security reasons, German media N-TV reported.
The latest decision affects twice-weekly services operated by Lufthansa from Frankfurt as well as daily flights by Austrian Airlines between Erbil and Vienna, Lufthansa said in a statement.
On flights to Asia and the Middle East, the airlines of Lufthansa will continue to make a detour around Iraqi airspace, said the carrier.
U.S. military forces have conducted multiple airstrikes against militants of the Islamic State in northern Iraq over the weekend to defend Kurdish forces near Erbil, where U.S. personnel are located.
Lufthansa on Friday announced that it was suspending flights to Erbil - currently the only destination in Iraq that the airline serves - over the weekend, according to media reports
