Cairo - MENA
The Egyptian Embassy here marked the 44th anniversary of the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
"Nasser was a leader with a vision. He was interested in the welfare of his country and the Arab world as he exerted all efforts and sacrificed a lot for this purpose. His achievements are still alive among us such as the nationalization of the Suez Canal and the construction of the High Dam which led to a great industrial renaissance represented in the factories of Iron, Steel, and Aluminum fabrication", said Egyptian Ambassador to Mauritania, Ahmed Fadel.
He praised the role played by the late president in the history of modern Egypt, saying "his ideas are still in our hearts".
"The Arab nation supported Nasser's decisions and politics when he defended the Palestinian cause and African nations' right of freedom and stability. He also contributed to the foundation of the Non-Aligned Movement", the ambassador said at a ceremony held in this occasion.
The director of the Egyptian cultural center in Nouakchott also hailed the Mauritanian interest in whatever related to Egypt, noting that Nouakchott was the only Arab capital that performed salat al-ghaib at the same time Egyptians in Cairo were performing funeral on Nasser.
"The Nasserism movement played a crucial role in restoring Mauritania's Arab Identity that France worked hard to wipe away", said the coordinator of the Nasserism conference in Mauritania.
A Mauritanian parliament member also lauded the pioneering Egyptian role both in the Arab and African regions during president Nasser's era.
A 25-minute film about Nasser citing his life and the challenges he faced was displayed during the ceremony taking place in the biggest hall in the Mauritanian museum.
