Antiquities Minister Mamdouh Damaty

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh Damaty, accompanied by Cairo Governor Galal Saeed, opened on Sunday Aytmish El Bagasi mosque in Cairo's Bab el Wazir area after the completion of restoration works.

The mosque, one of the most important Islamic antiquities in Old Cairo, was built in 1383.

It was erected by Prince Aytmish El Bagasi who was the regent of the Mamluk Sultan Farag Ibn Barquq.

The entrance of the Mosque is handsomely decorated with beautifully shaped leaf patterns and a ribbed dome. The decoration of the façade expounds some of the characteristics of decoration style that had been commonly used late the 13th century.

Around the Mosque appears a group of buildings that date back to Mohamed Ali period.
