DUBAI - Arab Today
On her rise to become Canada’s Minister for Democratic Reform, Maryam Monsef told how she came from humble roots in Afghanistan to make it to cabinet.
When US President Barack Obama addressed the Canadian Parliament in June, he singled Monsef, 31, out for her remarkable story.
But that’s what it was: A story.
An investigation into her past by a Toronto-based newspaper has revealed Monsef was actually born and lived her early life in Iran, before going to Canada as a refugee in 1996.
The newspaper says she has confirmed their findings that she was born at the Imam Reza hospital in Mashhad, Iran. Her parents were both Afghans.
The office of Canada’s Prime Minister said it is now investigating.
