Female genital mutilation (FGM) is prohibited at religious and legal levels, Egypt's Dar al Iftaa said.
In a statement on Thursday, Dar al Iftaa said FGM is mainly an Arab tribal habit, but has no religious origins.
He added that Prophet Muhammad did not circumcise his daughters, noting that several international health organizations proved the negative effects of FGM.
