Sohar University has installed a 1 kW standalone Desert PV Module Test Bed system in collaboration with the Kwan Won Engineering and Construction Company of South Korea. The facility was inaugurated recently under the auspices of Dr Abood al Sawafi, the Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, in the presence of Dr Hamza, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and other members of faculty. Also present were officials from the Majan Electricity Company as well as GIPI Company. Lee Yong Ho, the CEO and president of Kwan Won, said: “Through this 1kW solar power system, at Sohar University, we are able to reduce CO2 emission by 1400g per year which is equivalent to plant 350 trees in the campus. This is the typical effect to reduce carbon dioxide gas from a 1 KW solar power plant.” “Kwan Won is proposing to invest in 50 MW solar power plants in Sohar and Duqm Industrial City. It is expected that further technology improvement and reduction in production cost will result in large scale power generation from photovoltaic cells in near future”, he added. The South Korean firm has also installed similar system at the Sultan Qaboos University for the students to study and develop more advanced technology for the new renewable green energy.
