The Australian government announced Monday it will provide a $10-million additional grant over two years to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support the education system and increase access to quality educational services for Syrian refugee children and host communities in Jordan.
The grant was announced during a high-level visit by representatives of the Australian Parliament at an invitation of the Save the Children-Australia to Jordan, where they toured the UNICEF-funded Makani center in Wadi Sir in Amman, and met children benefiting from the center’s services.
“The Australian government is committed to supporting the Jordanian government to achieve its goal of bringing every child to school, as access to quality education is essential to create opportunities of normal life for children affected by the Syrian crisis,” said the Australian Ambassador to Jordan, Miles Robert Armitage.
This additional grant comes as part of Australia’s humanitarian three-year resilience plan to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, valued at $174 million.
The number of Syrian students enrolled in formal education in public schools in the Kingdom reached 126,000 in 2016-2017 academic year.
