A keen bird hunter was appointed as Malta's new
parliamentary secretary for animal welfare on Thursday, a decision
which has baffled nature lovers. Clint Camilleri was appointed as parliamentary secretary for agriculture, fisheries and animal welfare by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who announced his new cabinet four days after a landslide election victory. A member of Malta's hunting federation, Camilleri had campaigned against banning hunting in spring in Malta, despite the fact it is outlawed in the rest of the EU in line with the so-called "birds directive." Arnold Cassola, the chairman of the Green Party in Malta told dpa: "It is the most illogical of choices. How can you have a keen hunter to push animal welfare?"
