Kuwait - KUNA
Kuwaiti divers lifted 12 tons of waste from seabed off the northern Al-Zor beach, in coordination with Kuwait Municipality and the Saudi Chevron company.
Walid Al-Fadhel, the head of the team, affiliated to the Environmental Voluntary Foundation (EVF), told KUNA the two-day voluntary campaign resulted in cleaning up the seabed off the northern coastal region.
The removed objects included a sunken boat, plastic items, barrels and other things. The team took advantage of receding waters along the two-km-long beach to locate and remove the dumped items.
Al-Fadhel added that the campaign to clean up the coastal regions and the islands would continue in cooperation with government authorities, indicating anew that acts harmful to the environment of Kuwait are punishable by law.
Authorities have regularly cleaned sea-beds in the territorial waters, along the beaches, at harbors and around the Kuwaiti islands. There have been repeated warnings against acts that harm the land and marine environments.
