Jedda - KUNA
The GCC environment media and awareness committee members discussed their assessment of activities on the matter conducted over 2014 and future plans and programmes in a meeting on Sunday. The major topic of discussion was the second five-year (2016-20) plan, including several proposed activities and plans which will be referred to ministers of the six-nation bloc ahead of their adoption, General Secretariat Advisor Adel Al-Bastaki told KUNA. The two-day talks are also assessing the effectiveness of awareness campaigns, conducted between the end of 2013 and up until now, by each of the countries - Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The committee was established according to a meeting of ministers and senior officials, tasked with the environment, in 2005. It holds two meetings every year and is currently operating amidst its first five-year plan, which ends in 2015. It cooperates with a number of regional and international organisations, namely the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) regional West Asia office
